This answer is from our expert Vamsi, Marine Engineer :
There are a couple of Institutes offering a four year course in Marine Engineering. However, the first criteria in choosing an institute is its recognition by the Directorate General of Shipping. If the institute is not recognised, the degree is not valid for sailing purposes later on.
Most of the well established institutes in India have the recognition.
As you mentioned, International Maritime Academy offers a four year
programme in Marine Engineering and the degree is offered by
Yashwantra Chavan Maharashtra Open University.
It is quite obvious to choose an institute which has a good repute in the industry and the quality of the degree offered. If you are particular about studying in Chennai, I suggest you to look into 'Academy of Maritime Education and Training(AMET)' in Chennai which is more popular in the industry. If you consider acquiring a quality degree, R.L.Institute of Nautical Sciences in Madurai offers a BITS Pilani degree for the four year programme.
I suggest you to look into the above mentioned institutes before making a decision. Personally I suggest AMET because of its fame and repute.
