Gemology & Jewellery Design - Glitters & Glory

There are some of us who moan and dwindle our thumbs in impatience during every visit to the jewellery shop, while our mothers admire the thousands of glittering precious pieces of the earth. And there are some of us, who would drag our mothers to the shop, gaining immense pleasure each time the salesman brings out a new design and could spend hours marvelling at those jewels! As you would have guessed, those of you who fall in the latter nurse a passion for jewels and hence, a career in this field is obviously your true calling!

While gemmologists are more craft-oriented, jewellery designers focus more on the aesthetics and the pattern of arrangement of jewels in their piece of jewellery such as necklaces, bracelets, earrings etc. As a gemmologist, you will be involved in giving shape to gemstones, making gem sculptures, exporting jewels etc. In the profession of a jewellery designer, you will be creating new patterns using your imagination, mixing and matching different combinations of jewels, creating new types of adornment and also, be in constant interaction with crafts persons and gemmologists. This profession is expected to grow by leaps and bounds in the near future owing to rising consciousness for fashion.
