Thousands of career choices are available in our fast-changing society then why would you choose meteorology? Well..  Meteorologist as it is commonly called is also known as atmospheric scientist.

Meteorology is an inter-disciplinary science which studies the phenomena of the atmosphere, and applies the knowledge for analysis, prediction and control of the natural conditions that affect our daily life. In fact, meteorological information is vital not only for daily weather forecasts and research, but also for business and industry, transport and telecommunication, agriculture, and defence and so on. Doesn't it sounds all interesting !!!!! Trust us a career in it is much more interesting than what's written !!!!

To succeed as a meteorologist, you should have:

  • An enthusiastic interest in meteorology and other environmental sciences
  • An aptitude for physics and maths
  • An analytical and logical approach to problem solving
  • Good power of observation 
  • Attention to detail
  • Able to collate, process and interpret data from a range of sources
  • Good interpersonal, spoken and written communication skills are necessary as work involves being a member of a multidisciplinary team
  • An interest in keeping up to date in the field

Employment avenues for meteoroloists are in :

  • Department of Meteorology of the Government of India
  • Armed Forces also require the services of meteorologists, for guiding Navy ships in adverse weather conditions, and in the Air Force, for briefing pilots
  • Private and government agencies such as Central and State Agril. Universities, Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR)
  • Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO), Space Application Center (SAC), National Remote Sensing Agency (NRSA)
  • Department of Science and Technology (DST), Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO).

  » Study route to meteorological science courses is:

» 10+2 or Intermediate or equivalent with Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics subjects

» Graduation (B.Sc.) preferably in physics or mathematics

» One should go for post graduation degree(M.S. or Ph.D) in Meteorology for better job prospects.

» After graduation, one can try an examination conducted by Staff Selection Commission for recruiting as a Senior Observer in Indian Meteorological Departments in Chennai, Kolkata and Mumbai.

» The Indian Meteorological Department provides them with on-the-job training as meteorologists.
