The story of Anne Sullivan who brought light into the dark life of Helen Keller is well known. From someone who was ignorant of any language Helen Keller went on to become an author. Miracle? Yes, miracle of a Special education  teacher. 
Special education teachers work for special children – those with mental or physical disorders - adopting new methods and curriculum suiting the needs of those challenged students. Along with it, special education teachers also have to be compassionate and patient with their students.
Although helping these students can be highly rewarding, the work also can be 
emotionally and physically draining. Like any other work being a special education teacher requires commitment, in fact a lot of it.

Would this career suit me ??
To be a good special educator, one needs a great deal of :

 

  • Good organization & collaboration skills
  • High energy level and ability to handle multiple tasks simultaneously.
  • Ability to perform strenuous tasks, such as lifting and carrying small children
  • Affectionate nature

  • Gentleness in voice & behaviour

  • Practical and an encouraging approach
  • Positive attitude

 

Where will I work ??

There is a reasonable assurance of a job being special educator , though it may not be highly remunerative but highly satisfying. They are in:

  •  Special schools, or special classes in regular schools
  • Rehabilitation centers ex: Sweekar, Upkaar
  • In government or missionaries  settings to work with children with mental retardation
  • In pediatric units of hospitals, pediatrics clinics
  • Child guidance clinics, child development centres
  • Rural primary health centers

» Becoming a special educator requires not only specialized professional education and skills but also compassion.

» At least a bachelor's degree is required to become a special education teacher.

» Preferred path would be take up bachelors in any steam  and then pursue B.Ed. Special Education(Mental Retardation)

» A dedicated course is also available in few colleges Bachelor's Degree in Rehabilitations Service(Therapeutics)

» An individual can also take up a diploma course or professional preparation after bachelors degree (any subject )

» Professional preparation includes specialized course work, field experiences with children with disabilities, and student teaching.
