The Wait is over .................but was the wait worth it??

Admin: The post is sent to us by a CAT aspirant who prefers to keep his name anonymous.

In below writeup he vents out his frustration on CAT -Fiasco which led to many consequences in his career progression.

The judgment got delayed and delayed, but was the wait worth it is the big question ? Or lets jump to more important question for the 2.4 lakh students who waited for 3 months. Was the judgment right? Was the method used for evaluating the students correct? Was the gauze faulty?

Though it has been talked about and discussed thousand times there is no right answer to the question "Is the selection process for the most reputed MBA colleges in India justified?"

There are many questions that were left unanswered after CAT -2010.

The registration process for CAT started from 9th September 2009 and the CAT 2010 story is still going on. IIM authorities decided to make the registration process also online but it was not a smooth ride either. The registration process was marred by issues itself so the authorities had no option other than to extend the registration process. Somehow the registration process closed successfully and the students hoped that the worst was over. But they didn't knew that this was just the tip of the iceberg.

Then came the D-day and the students already anxious about the new format were in for a surprise. CAT -2010 started was full of problems- disruptions caused due to malfunctioning of computers; missing graphics and data; consequent rescheduling of test and premature exit due to inadvertent use of "End" button. The problems were seen in large numbers on the initial days of the test. The students who appeared for the test on subsequent went into the examination with doubts whether the Prometric softwares will let them complete the test.
After lot of uproar by the affected students and their families the second phase of the CAT was planned. This meant that the results of the CAT will be delayed to the 3rd week of February. But even after the 3rd week of February came and went by no results were declared. Finally after much delay the results were declared on 28th February. Wait but the CAT story was not over yet.

The results declared were far from being fair. CAT scorecard contained scaled scores instead of the actual score of the students. According to Prometric the scaling was done to adjust the difficulty levels across different slots. This was again a contradiction from the earlier statement by the IIM authorities that the difficulty level would be maintained across different slots. Moreover the criteria used for this scaling was not clear. For the sake of explanation a vague term "Psychometric equivalences" was introduced without any further info on how this was used.

Out of 8 IIM's(including IIM Ranchi) only 2 declared their Interview shortlist on 28th Feb. Actually the IIM's were busy modifying the shortlist criteria so that the weight-age of CAT scores are reduced significantly. In some cases the weight age on CAT scores were reduced by as much as 45% compared to previous year. IIM-Kozhikode -- which placed the highest weightage on CAT scores all these years, 90 points -- has proposed reducing it to 50 points for this academic year's admission. Shortlist for IIMI calls was not posted until 11th March. The shortlist for IIMRanchi is still awaited.

The most surprising fact here is that the HRD ministry is sleeping all through the CAT fiasco without any concerns for the students. It is quite evident that even the IIM's have reduced the weightage of CAT scores for a reason. But the HRD ministry is either not concerned to intervene or is turning a blind eye to everything. They seem to be following the words of "Bapu" quite religiously "Bura mat dekho, Bura mat suno".

The CAT-2010 can be summed up in a few words -
The Mismanagement by Management GURUS.

It seems the only good CAT-2010 was able to achieve this time around was to Save paper and about 1000 trees in the process.

CAT server crashes - What went wrong??

For the past 33 years, the Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs) have been conducting the Common Admission Test (CAT) in a paper-pencil format. But this year, the most important examination of India which promises to make best managers of the country took a new avatar - it went online and became a Computer-Based Test.

Giving CAT 2009 did not require one to be a computer geek; all that was needed was the basic understanding of mouse and keyboard usage. But to the dismay, the biggest Management exam Online CAT 2009 is now being written off as a foolish step.
We were apprehensive about the problems coming with CAT 2009 and we did write about it. Read here CAT 2009 to come with problems.

The test which is scheduled from  Nov 28 and Dec 7 in 32 cities at 105 testing centers is connected to a main server. But the first-ever online CAT was cancelled at various centers in Chennai, Kolkata, Bhopal, Bangalore, Mumbai and Pune.

Reason:  Server Breakdown!

MeraCareerGuide.Com talked to an employee of “Prometric- The Company who is wholly responsible for conducting these tests.”   More than 2.41 lakh students are appearing for the first online CAT test across the country in span of 10 days and there is no major outbreak of server crash, On the first day of CAT online the number of crash reported came to be around two thousand !! ( Hmm.....Do you think its a small number !!! Innocent )

Few people are signing off saying “India can’t even do an online exam”  to all those individuals, BITSAT, the first ever online exam in India takes the crown and glory of being first ever completely computerized exam which went flawless from its very first execution and remains untainted.

Interview with Anubhav Jain, Gradaute from IIM Indore

CAT 2009 is round the corner. So,MeraCareerGuide.Com did a interview with Anubhav Jain, a 25 years old gradaute from IIM-Indore, currently working at American Express as a Business Analyst. Anubhav talks about his CAT experience and gives the success mantra to CAT 2009 aspirants.

MeraCareerGuide:  Tell us about your educational Journey?

Anubhav:  I have graduated under the PGP programme of IIM Indore in 2008. Prior to that, I have done B.Tech in Information Technology from Indraprastha University, Delhi. Engineering was an obvious choice for me as most people with a Science background (which I was forced to take up in Standard XI !) end up doing. Management was something I wanted to pursue once I realized that my skills and competencies needed a further refinement and direction for a stronger career growth.

MeraCareerGuide: How did you prepare for CAT? Joined a coaching institute or prepared yourself?

Anubhav:  I started preparing for CAT 2005 in June when I joined a coaching institute. But I have always believed that self-study is the most important factor behind an individual's success because there is only a certain value that external coaching can add.

MeraCareerGuide: How did you prepare for each section of CAT ?

Anubhav: Being significantly good in Quantitative Abilities and Data Interpretation/Logical Reasoning sections, which I could sense from my scores in the first couple of Mock Tests, I decided to focus more on the Verbal Ability section and practice questions for the other two sections from time to time. For the VA section, I took up the cue-cards provided for improving vocabulary and made sure to read some other stuff on a daily basis (newspapers, magazines or the study material provided by the coaching institute).

MeraCareerGuide: What changes have MBA school brought in you? All the news we hear about the aura a big business school casts on the student is true?

Anubhav:  An MBA school brings about a whole lot of changes to the personality of an individual as a whole. It infuses a sense of awareness, thereby increasing the level of confidence. I am not sure about the aura of a big business school, because at the end of the day, all business schools teach the same thing, but quality of individuals that one interacts with during one's stay at a business school could shape up the way one perceives things around oneself.

MeraCareerGuide: This year's CAT is going to be online - which one do you think is better, CAT with pen and paper or CBT mode of CAT?

Anubhav: Online CAT would be a much better mode considering the amount of savings that could be generated. Moreover, it would provide some flexibility to the students to take up the exam.

MeraCareerGuide: What message do you have for aspirant MBAs and CATers ?

Anubhav: My only advise is - "Work Smart" because in today's times, smart work and not hard work is what pays more dividends.

MeraCareerGuide: Any  advice for students about choosing their careers ?

Anubhav: Believe in yourself, make an informed decision and always pursue what you want to.

Every year CAT ( Common Admission Test) takes a new avatar, but this times it’s new from is going to be completely different. Instead of paper and pen you will use computer and keyboard. This online method for CAT 2009 may not see much change in the question paper pattern, but methodology employed to answer the questions will need to be worked upon.

For that you don’t have to be a computer geek; all you will need is the basic understanding of mouse and keyboard usage.

Take practice test everyday, and then spend a little time analyzing the test. The major parameters to keep in mind while analyzing the test are

Concentration:

A high degree of concentration is also not easy for first time test takers. This may affect the test. Comprehensive tests make us to sit for two hours at a stretch and we increase our attentive span.

Speed:

See if your speed is better than previous tests.  (If you do not understand basics you cannot apply them to tougher problems. This might take more time to solve a question and thus reducing the speed. )

Time Management:

Time management is highly important to successfully crack any comprehensive test. So you should manage time and allocate certain time to each section depending on your strength and weakness.

Accuracy:

Accuracy is the number of correct questions out of attempted questions. If accuracy is not high, you need brush up the chapters again.(those which are reducing the accuracy).

We have put up daily teasers for you to take advantage of it. Also, you will find archieve for 3 days to help you take in-depth analysis.

Take the test every alternate day, and help yourself crack CAT.

All the Best ! Smile
