About the Author:-
Neha: - I am an
ardent writer who believes words are the most wonderful medium to express
thoBeing part of corporate world for quite a while, I love to share my
insights with fellow people /aspiring professionals.
We all often face the dilemma of choosing the right stream
once we are all set to move out of school. In the age of growing competition we
are burdened by the raised expectations and overtly heightened standards of
performances by our peers. Somewhere in the race to reach the top, we lose the
sight of our actual goal, the goal to exercise our talent in the direction that
gives us utmost satisfaction and success which is imperative in terms of
fulfillment not just monetary gain. You
and I are just an iota of the huge populace of youngsters who jostle between
the myriad options we see in front of us. Often we tend to choose a profession
in which our elder brothers or sisters have achieved success. If you have an
elder brother who is doing immensely well as a .Net Architect you would
instantly begin to equate success with the profession.
But hold on, do you
actually have the mindset, skill set and most importantly a liking for the
same. Without having an innate
inclination towards anything you should never attempt to make it your full time
bread winning chore. Why? Because
whenever we try to do anything which we do not like, it turns into a boring
mechanical process which ends up making us feel reckless in the long run. The idea is simple. Before you go ahead and
make that biggest decision of your life, weigh your options very wisely. There is multiplicity of alternatives with
opportunities galore for you to choose from. Remember: Being Engineer or a
Doctor is not the only thing that makes you famous.
In case you have artistic inclinations, then nothing better
than a Fine Arts degree. It can give you lots of money, fame and also feed the
hunger for creativity in you. A person
with excellent written communication skills should not waste his innovations in
writing the code and user interface messages. Explore the varied dimensions of
writing in the present world. From being print journalist to part time web
content author, a writer can explore a world of endless opportunities.
Animation is another arena where you have the huge platform
to exhibit your skills and creativity. There are number of animation institutes
and media schools where this art is taught. You can master it by innovating new
things.
If you think you have the power to plan and add spice to
various functions then get to the exciting world of event management and
function planning. Here you just need to have the ability to organize things
and manifest the wonderful ideas which you have.
These are just few options which you can think over in case
you want to look beyond the stereotypical traits of successful
professional. When it comes to being
successful remember you need to make your choices well and get into something
that interests you. Try to have a career for yourself and not just to impress
the world around. The world praises one
who does best, no matter what he does.
It’s always better to be best in your niche area rather than
being a nonexistent entity in the wide industry.

Share on FacebookThey say..."Ignorance is bliss"!!! Come third year end, and every college student is all geared up to get that one thing done, for which the whole undergraduate course is mugged up!!! Well, you might have guesses it right, but for those who haven't.........its PLACEMENT time!!! When it comes to getting a job, everyone wants to know everything about everything. We couldn't possibly give you that 'everything', but we don't want you to have "nothing". Hence, this is a sincere effort on our part to give you that inside story, that "something", or even "something" for that matter, you might end up having "nothing",which is definitely not happening! They say....."Ignorance is Bliss"! We say....."Naaaaaah"!
DELOITTE INDIA : This was the only company which had a case study round and an aptitude based written round, where the questions are not very difficult. This was followed by a technical interview round where good knowledge of thefield is essential. It wasn't difficult if one was well versed with all the basic concepts. Knowledge of 'how a case study is to be handled' will help you a lot!.
ESSAR STEEL : Basic concepts and knowledge are tested in the written round. It is essential to remain calm and keep track of the time during the test. The interview had in-depth questioning from any two favourite subjects of the students. Confidence is the key to both GD and the interview. Also, importance is given to the projects and trainings.
NTPC Ltd :
The branches allowed are Civil, Electrical, Mechanical and Electronica and Communication. The interview starts with HR related questions, such as how one would be able to adjust with the harsh conditions on-site and how much dedication could the candidate show towards the organization in the long run considering that there will be greater temptations to join the private sector. The technical aspect of the interview comprises of conceptual questions. For example, for civil, questions from structures and Soil mechanics are asked. These includes drawing and bending moment and shear force diagrams of comlicated beams, finding the slope and deflection of members, designing of compression members in steel etc. Thus, placement is NTPC demands good rank in class, generally within top 5 and good technical knowledge.
RELIANCE ENERGY :
Their main aim is to check the technical knowledge. HR related questions are not asked. The first round is a written technical round for testing the basic concepts, followed by a interview round which again is purely technical. One unique thing about this company is that, unlike other companies, the GD round is conducted after the interview. A strong technical background is the sole necessity for this company.
HALLIBURTON : The procedure includes three stages : first, a written round, followed by a GD and finally the interview. The written round is one of a kind. The technical questions were tough but the aptitude based ones were easier.
ASHOK LEYLAND : The written section consists of three different papers concentrating on the naunces of Mechanical Engineering, basic engineering concepts and aptitude skills. This ensured that the students are proficient in both technical and aptitude skills. The mechanical paper consists of questions on automobiles, IC engines, manufacturing processes, fluid mechanics, refrigeration etc. The basicengineering paper concentrated on mechanics and basic physics. The interview process was a mix of both HR and technical skills. Concepts related to engines, thermodynamics and basic physics are stressed on. There is astrong emphasis on the academic record and projects done. Having a good pointer will certainly help you.
L&T (HED) : This company looks for really good technical knowledge. The HR related questions are easy to handle. A good command over the basics and a thorough understandingof the training undergone is the sole criteria for selection.
BPCL : The candidates are short-listed on the basis of their CGPA. The selection process after this is cariied out in two phases - a GD, followed by an interview. The GD check's one's communication skills and the interview is purely technical. A strong grasp over the subject and confidence during the interview will certainly help you.
Mahindra and Mahindra : The selection process starts with an objective test (with an Auto-Passion section too) followed by a GD and an interview. Knowledge about the current developments in the Indian automobile industry was tested. IC Engines and Automobile engineering were the main topics of focus. One is expected to be completely thorough with all his projects and trainings.
Accenture India Ltd. : First, a written test is conducted which has 55 questions comprising quant, verbal ability, reasoning etc. The GD round tests, one'scommunication and leadership skills. This is followed by two interview rounds, first being technical and other being HR related. For IT/CS, technical questions related to C/C++ are asked, while for the non IT branches, focus is mainly upon the projects and the summer training. Basic technical knowledge is a must.

MARUTI SUZUKI INDIA Ltd. : The selection procedure starts witha written test where subject knowledge regarding IC engines, Manufacturing processes and Automobile engineering are tested. then, on the basis of this, students are shortlisted for the interview which is purely technical. knowledge level in all subjects are tested. Good pointers gives definite edge in the interview. There are questions based on Industrial training and Minor projects as well.
DRDO : Candidates are shortlisted on the basis of their CGPA and only an in-depth technical interview was conducted. The interview panel consists of 5 technical experts including the HOD of the Mechanical department. The emphasis is on both the minor and major projects and software knowledge (if any). Questions are mainly from Fluid Mechanics. A good command over the subject is essential. The results are declared after six months.
APPLIED MATERIALS : Basic concepts of Electrical and MechanicalEngineering are tsted on. The preferance is given to practical application rather than theoritical concepts.
MICROSOFT : It consists of a written test in which, one question, each on craetivity, testing, data structures, debugging & sorting are asked. Interview is conducted which consists of questions on coding and testing. They mainly check the stability of the program made and wheather it tackles all kinds of contigencies and had an optimised time complexity.
SAMSUNG : The written round is purely aptitude based with no technical aspect. This round is followed by two rounds of interview, first being the technical one followed by the HR interviews. The technical interview mainly checks the basic concepts and the candidate's analytical ability whereas the HR interview is a general interaction to know more about the candidate.
MU-Sigma : The selection process cmprises fo three rounds. The first round is a written aptitute test. After this, GD is conducted, which is followed by the interview. The interviewers are mainly intersted in checking the analytical abilities of thecandidates, which they do by asking riddles and puzzles. These are not so easy and the interviewers demand loud thinking so that they could just the approach of the students. As the questions are very tough, the answers did not matter as much as the approach used does.

She specializes in Human Rights and Climate Change Solutions. She is a writer for The HINDU and has worked with various NGO’s and Youth Organizations in India, UK and USA. | | To a world of only 2 fixed career options - Engineering and Medicine, and rarely a 3r done, namely Chartered Accountancy; the field of ' Social Work ' is a name that often gets lost or is rarely heard. When someone joins an NGO for full-time work or becomes a Social Worker, the rest of the world assumes that the person couldn’t get into any job or work field and hence chose to take this career path. Today, the tables have turned. Being a Social Worker is not a vocation or excuse tostep outside the regular career track anymore. The Non-profit Sector is slowlyand steadily booming in India. People are finally stepping up to take notice of the importance of Social Work asa medium/Career option and its significance in a world plagued by poverty, despair, and the ever-widening 'Rich-Poor Divide'. (ref: http://freedomkeys.com/gap.htm) | | Some of the areas of Social work are - Healthcare, Education, Counseling, Social Well-being, Public Policy-making, etc. Most Social Workers today work at established NGOs or start one of their own. Again the kind of work in these offices/sectors could range from Fund raising, data-collection, surveying, conflict studies, Marketing, handling finances, negotiating with the Government to otherdiverse range of works that also include Technology, PR, Media studies, Documentary and Film-making. Most of the activities and work are field-based and involve direct interaction with the people who are being impacted and helped as a part of the cause. Additionally, some social-work experts conduct research, advocate for improved services, or become involved in planning or policy development. Many social workers specialize in serving a particular population or working in a specific setting. For each specific area of work, there are certifications and licenses to be obtained before-hand. A set of new avenues for a study in Social Work have come up, which include the Bachelors and Masters in Social Work(BSW or MSW), and a series of various specialization courses which have been startedat many universities across India. One look at the courses on offer at Symbiosis PUNE and Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS) throws important light on the different subjects that one could develop into: - Health Administration and Hospital Administration
- Public Health
- Globalization and Labour
- Human Resources Management and Labour Relations
- Social Entrepreneurship
- Development Studies
- Disability Studies
- Disaster Management
- Habitat Policy & Practice
- Women’s Studies
Career Prospects A degree in Social work could fetch a position in Governmental as well as non-governmental sector. In the governmental sector, you would be working on community development projects pertaining to health, education, rural development, child, woman and tribal welfare etc. Work in NGOs’ can be specific to either urban or rural areas and as diverse asagriculture to child labor. Postgraduates in Social Work could have CSR-related job opportunities in the industrial and corporate sector. Corporate Social Responsibility is once again an new concept in the world of Social Change and Development (will be discussed in detail soon). Students opting social work as career may find jobs in child welfare and community service societies for providing mental, health, medical, educational and correctional services. Now a days, many NGOs and government agencies are also working for environmental protection and conservation, whichis a great field of interesting research and work. Institutes Offering Several institutes and universities offer Bachelors and Master Degrees in Social Work in India. Some of the most important ones are Indian Institute of Social Welfare and Business Management, Calcutta; Tata Institute of Social Sciences, Mumbai; Institute of Social Sciences, Agra; University of Delhi, Delhi; Rajasthan University, M.S. University of Baroda, Bombay University, Aurangabad University, Mangalore University, Loyola College of Social Sciences, Trivandrum and Madras School of Social Work, Chennai. Salary and Remuneration Remunerations of certified and licensed professional social worker could vary according to their job profile, qualification, area of expertise, the community they work in and previous work experience. Those employed in government’s community developmental projects have starting earnings of Rs 10,000 to Rs 15,000 in rural and Rs.15,000 to 20,000 incity/urban areas. Those working for NGOs also have similar pay structures. Onecan expect higher salary in corporate houses and industries for CSR and other related roles. The Social Workers who are running their own NGOs would bemaking good earnings once they establish themselves and earn a good reputation in their area of work. |
