2009 – A Year Of Ups & Downs for Education Sector.
|
|
2009 was a year of mixed bad for the education sector. The year began amid the fears of recession and employees losing jobs. Students were horror-struck for not being placed in esteemed institutes. Truth be told, the placements for the 2009 batch even at the IIT and IIM's were severely effected.
According to the HRD ministry the number of offers at the seven IIT's dropped from 3031 to 1606 for the year 2009. The average salary for students dipped to Rs 6 lakh per annum from Rs 7.44 lakh per annum last year. The management graduates did not fare any better with the average salary for IIM-A dipping by 25-30%.
While the first half was a little sluggish and made the students anxious the second half was filled with hopes and positive energy. With the US economy posting the strongest growth in last 2 years for the third quarter, the economy was poised for a solid growth. These signs were a clear indicator of the revival in the hiring pattern by the MNC's.
Things started to look better for IITians as many PPO offers flew in even before the final placements started. IIMs planned to introduce a longer placement season instead of the usual 4-5 days placement session conducted in the previous years. They focused more on PSU companies. Definitely the IIM's looked in no mood to take any risks and laid out their cards pretty safely.

That was the scenario of the placement section in the higher education system. A lot of unusual affairs happened at the schooling front too.
The HRD ministry for the first time planned to revamp the conventional education system. Kapil Sibal's famous statement "Our education system should change from MOTS (More of the Same) to HOTS (High Order Thinking Skills)" summed it up all. He went on to suggest that the HRD ministry is planning to introduce grading system for Class 10. It was a welcome and, of course, unbelievable change. For the first time Indian Education system would relieve the students of the burden of 10th board exams! Under the grading system, students would be given grades like A+, A, B, C, D and E. And no Board Topper or 98% and 99%!
Furthermore, the highly looked up to entrance exam for MBA-CAT went online. But accidents were to happen. The test proved a failure. There were power failures, server crashes and IIMs were questioned about their managing capabilities. Consequently, the test is re-scheduled to take place in the last few days of Jan, 2010.
Certainly a year full of mixed things. Hopefully 2010 only brings success and no failures in the Indian education system. |
