But to play the spoilsport, kill the joy of college campuses and schoolactivities here comes dreadly Swine Flu.The WHO has raised the Influenza Pandemic Alert to the highest level which is 6. India has seen over 40 confirmed cases of Swine Flu and the threat of a fullblown epidemic in India is very real. Colleges and schools around Pune and parts of mumbai have been shut for a week. Few have extended their admission dates. The best we citizens can do is keep ourselves informed about the happenings and the steps we can take to prevent the spread of the flu. Symptoms In children, emergency warning signs that need urgent medical attention include:
- Fast breathing or trouble breathing
- Bluish or gray skin color
- Not drinking enough fluids
- Severe or persistent vomiting
- Being so irritable that the child does not want to be held
- Flu-like symptoms improve but then return with fever and worse cough
In adults, emergency warning signs that need urgent medical attention include:
- Difficulty breathing or shortness of breath
- Pain or pressure in the chest or abdomen
- Sudden dizziness
- Confusion
- Severe or persistent vomiting
- Flu-like symptoms improve but then return with fever and worse cough
Steps to Lessen the Spread of Flu:
- Keep the sick person away from other people as much as possible.
- Remind the sick person to cover their coughs, and clean their hands with soap and water or an alcohol-based hand rub often, especially after coughing and/or sneezing.
- Clean your hands often, using soap and water or an alcohol-based hand rub.
- Wear a surgical mask
- Use paper towels for drying hands after hand washing or dedicate cloth towels to each person in the household.
