Why Career Counseling ??

|
Well there is the age old dilemma every child has to go through when he/she passes out of 10th class. What subjects do I choose? Which field should I enter? Often children are forced to choose a stream for its career viability and job security and of course the all important social status. While some of the blame is certainly attached to the parents, teachers and the society in general, the fact that children themselves have no one to turn to when it comes to helping them decide. This is where the profession of Career Counselling comes into picture.
Career Counselling may sound an overhyped and overstated profession that uses a lot of heuristics and statistics in equal levels to determine what a student "can do" or "must do" but when practised properly it can really make the choice for children much more comfortable. True counselling isn’t so much about "telling" the children "what to do" as it is about "helping" them decide. Career counsellors may not help in changing social stigma but can definitely help in alleviating any stigma within the students who wish to follow unorthodox or non academic professions.
The Career counsellor today can open these paths for the flummoxed youth and make them truly goal oriented. While Robert Frost may have written about the Road not taken, Career Counsellors can help students actually take the lesser travelled roads to success. In today’s world it’s not the orthodox that are successful, but the creative and the innovative who take unorthodox paths and come up with novel ideas.
Clearly, the time has never been much more apt for the birth of a Career Counselling revolution in India. If India does indeed wish to achieve Mission 2020, it will need youngsters who are striding along new unexplored paths with vigour and confidence that was never present before. Career Counselling can give this to the youngsters. |
